Central FL power crews aid Carolinas during winter storm outages

Duke Energy Florida said they have deployed 280 members of crews or contractors from Florida to the Carolinas to help with winter storm power restoration."We had several that left from Winter Garden somewhat from Volusia," Ana Gibbs, a spokesperson for Duke Energy Florida, said. Duke Energy estimates 750,000 customers could lose power. The workers will spend Saturday evening in Florence, South Carolina. After the storm passes, the crews will head to whatever areas are most in need of help. "We are very grateful for getting that assistance during hurricanes and we want to return the favor during the winter months," Gibbs said. The Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) sent 11 line techs to North Carolina Saturday morning to help restore power. They are expected to arrive in North Carolina this afternoon and remain there as long as needed. The crew set on a 600-mile road trip to High Point, North Carolina, to assist the city with power restoration efforts in the wake of Winter Storm Izzy. Spencer Barnes, line supervisor, and a long-time OUC veteran is retiring on Feb. 28. For Barnes, the High Point deployment caps a 35-year career with OUC. "When we throw in those last jacks, and you see the lights come on. You kinda want to do a dance, but you just kind of hold off from that. But you're just really excited to see the smiles on people's faces," Barnes said. The OUC crew said they will remain in High Point as long as needed. Both OUC and Duke Energy said storm crews will follow social distancing protocols while on duty."To be able to go in there and supply lights, get the things in there we need to, to get to some kind of normalcy. It's a great feeling," Barnes said.
